Board of Governors meets THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS MET MAY 20 IN COLUMBIA. The Board approved the following: • a request from the Conventions Committee to hold the 2013 Convention at the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort and Spa at Grande Dunes; • a request to fund a part-time Bar staff position to assist in carrying out the work of the Lawyers Helping Lawyers program; • a proposal to offer additional Casemaker services to Bar members; and • revisions to the Lawyer Referral Service rules. The Board voted to oppose an initiative before the Court to amend Rule 608, SCACR, that would again authorize new appointments of Bar members as guardians ad litem in some circumstances. William K. Witherspoon was appointed to an at-large position on the Board of Governors. The Board received as information reports from the USC School of Law and the Task Force on Professional Potential. Rod Smolla and Carolyn Sawyer were appointed to the Commission on Judicial Independence and Impartiality. Kenneth C. The Law Related Education Lawyer of the Year Award was presented to Walter Dusky of Fort Mill, and the Young Lawyer of the Year Award was presented to William R. Johnson of Columbia. The work of this task force is the subject of the showcase session at the National Conference of Bar Presidents in August, providing a national stage for discussion of this important work.<br /> <br /> Other areas cited included the success of the 2010 Bar Convention at Kiawah, the progress of the new Bar building and efforts by the Task Force on Judicial Elections to study the judicial selection process.<br /> <br /> During the business portion of the meeting, the House also approved:<br /> <br /> • a request from the Lawyers Helping Lawyers Commission and HELP Task Force to add a law practice trustee to the Bar staff funded through the disciplinary assessment;<br /> <br /> • a bylaw amendment that will permit second notice of failure to pay license fees by e-mail;• a request from the Professional Responsibility Committee to amend Rule 407, SCACR, by adding Rule 1.19, allowing a member to voluntarily designate a successor to protect client interests, and amending Rule 1.15(f) for purposes of clarification and to add a safe harbor;<br /> <br /> • a request to amend Rule 401, SCACR, expanding the student practice rule; and<br /> <br /> • a request from the Probate, Estate Planning and Trust Section to amend Probate Court Form #350PC.<br /> <br /> The recommended rule changes will be forwarded to the Supreme Court.<br /> <br /> The House also approved Bar and CLE Division budgets for 2010-11 and received a report from the HELP Task Force.<br /> <br /> The following Bar members were appointed to the Nominating Committee: Stuart Mauney and Scott Pfeiffer, Region I, and Marie-Louise Ramsdale, Region<br /> <br /> IV. <br /> <br /> The Assembly convened at the conclusion of the meeting and ratified the approved bylaw amendment.
