Board of Governors meets The Board met on January 21 at Kiawah. The Board approved a request from the Young Lawyers Division to serve as a co-sponsor for the 2010 Special Olympics South Carolina. The Board received as information reports from the Task Force on Professional Potential; Task Force on Judicial System Funding; Task Force on Judicial Elections; the Young Lawyers Division on social media; and staff on new building progress. A committee was formed to determine a direction on social media for the Bar. House of Delegates convenes at Kiawah The Bar’s House of Delegates met on January 21 during the Bar Convention. During the meeting, Bar President Fred W. Suggs Jr. reported the progress made on initiatives since the beginning of his term, citing work in the areas of Rule 608 and judicial system funding, professional satisfaction, judicial inde- pendence and progress on the new Bar building. Carl L. Solomon was elected to the office of President-Elect. The House approved a request to sup- port exemptions under Rule 608, SCACR, for lawyer legislators. A request from the Resolution of Fee Disputes Board to support Rule 608 credit for investigative assignments on fee dispute cases was also approved. The House approved a request from the Resolution of Fee Disputes Board to support a rule change defining jurisdic- tion over a fee dispute in the event the attorney involved in the dispute is sus- pended from the practice of law. A proposal from the Professional Responsibility Committee to support amendment to the S.C. Rules of Professional Conduct allowing surrepti- tious recording when not performed in one’s capacity as a lawyer was approved. The above matters will be presented to the S.C. Supreme Court. The amendments would: • alter the composition of the Board of Governors by eliminating the seat for the dean and changing one of the designated seats for the YLD representatives; • add all in-state law school deans to the House; • accommodate the nomination process for a third ABA State Bar Delegate; • eliminate the senior member category (not Senior Lawyers Division); • reduce the membership requirement for each section to 70; and • create a mechanism for removal of a Board member for cause.
