SC BAR NEWS A Message from Bar President Carl Solomon Dear Bar Members: I am reaching out to each of you to underscore the urgency of the funding crisis facing our state courts. Over the last decade, the courts have sustained drastic reductions to basic operational funding. Although last year’s success-ful effort led to the appropriation of additional funds, that funding only returned the judicial branch to funding it received 10 years ago. The judiciary is operating at rock bottom and cannot afford to move backward. Your Bar leadership continues to support measures to preserve funding for the judicial branch, participating in a coalition led by the Chief Justice, talking to legislators and reaching beyond the state house lobby to engage the business community and our own members. Please help us educate all who will listen about the dangers of inadequate funding for the court system. Backlogs will worsen; small counties will be hurt when judges are restricted from travel; court closings will prohibit the enforcement of child support pay-ments; and public safety will be threatened when unprocessed charges of parole violations leave repeat offenders on the streets. Access to justice is a core responsibility of government, and I urge you to stay in contact with your legislators throughout this legislative session. We can compromise on many issues, but we cannot compromise on justice.
